Second Day of NaNo!
Nov. 2nd, 2010 07:35 pmI've decided to document every day (or as close as I can) of the madness that is NaNo, and so far I'm doing good. My target of 1700 (I overestimate to allow for mishaps) words a day is so perfect! It's neither unnattainable nor ridiculaously easy, so it's just enough to keep me motivated.
Writing on my iPhone is working well, and I've got the blogging app up and running again - it seemed it was a signal problem with my house ;)
--
EDIT: Bugger, I'm in the same situation as I was last night. Can't post the writing onto the blog and off the iphone, and now I'm racking up the words in their thousands the little screen isn't really cutting it. Silly house...
I also have less words this evening than I did yesterday, but since I have less 'real' work I'm hoping I'll still be okay. Plus, my writing homework contains some easy exercises to stave off the ennui!
--
In fact, I'll share my writing exercises here so that if any unfortunate soul mistakenly arrives here looking for Nano advice of actual writing tips (god forbid!) they shall have a consolation prize ;)

Think of a children's story, with "Little Red Riding Hood" as an example, though doing this with your NaNo could help.
*Reduce the story into 5 points.
*Tell the story through newspaper headlines.
*Think about a character from the story, and write a shopping list for them. Are they health-concious? Price conscious? Do they prefer any foods to others? Would they shop weekly, or monthly, or every couple of days? Do they buy treats and snacks or things for the weekend? Ask yourself questions like that.
*Go outside somewhere, and find people interacting the same way you imagine people to interact at a certain part of the story. Find a "Wolf" chatting up a "Red Riding Hood" (the tale's all about virginity, you know ;) or a harried mother to "Hansels" and "Gretels". Stuck on a NaNo scene? Take inspiration from the wide world.
*Take note of dialogue - arguments, etcetera- you hear throughout the day.
*Write a 50 word story. It can be utterly NaNo-unrelated (Clearing out cobwebs!) or tangently related (the story of how background characters met) or even as a way to flesh out a tricky scene. But... It could be a love story (in which case, ask parents how they met) or a detective story (look in a newspaper).
Think of a particular story between two of your characters in your NaNo story. Think of an item which could sum up a particular memory of their shared past. A childhood penletter? A photograph? A lipstick-stained napkin or an ill-advised tattoo? A pregnancy test? The possibilities are endless.
Happy NaNoing!
